With these two UPRs I've been experiencing some wierd things in UF that I can't explain. If you choose to render the images, please check to make sure that they look like the following: http://www.best.com/~icent/FireySpiral.jpg http://www.best.com/~icent/FireySprial2.jpg If they don't look like the above images, then you are experiencing the same wierdness that I am. If they look the same, then don't worry about it. :-) More Challenge #6 explorations to follow soon. Ken... P.S. Janet, please place the images you like best as thumbnails on the Challenge page. It doesn't matter to me. --------------------------------------------------------------------- KCC99022401c-FireySpiral { ; Copyright (c) 1999 by Ken Childress ; Calculation Time = 0:05:08.48 on 166 MHz Pentium. ; That's really hard to say. Given how many people read this list, though, I'd say probably quite a few. Ultra Fractal 2.0 has only just been officially released, so its distribution is still somewhat limited. Not that certain UF evangelists aren't trying to change that, mind you. :-) - Don't know if anybody knows this, but what about the others like - Fractint? I'd say there are legions of FractInt users... many who use it because it is free. Probably most UF users have used FractInt at one point or another. I stopped using FractInt almost entirely once I got a working beta of UF. Damien M. When I loaded the UPR, is rendered differently that when I saved the UPR. Then, I had to copy the formula tab from the layer that generated correctly, to the layer that didn't. Then all was well. If that is what is fixed, great. If not, then something else is funky. Also it appears that multiplying and subtraction favor RGB over CMY. Although the original layers have equal amounts of RGB and CMY, the results in these combinations have almost twice as much RGB as CMY. Multiplying produces less black than subtraction. Screening and addition seem to have equal amounts of RGB and CMY, but the distribution of the CMY colors in the resultant images are different from the RGB distribution in the same images. Addition produces less black than screening. > http://www.fractalus.com/info/mm-hardlight.jpg Hardlight is interesting. I obtained this image messing around with Frederik's "Silver Silk" previously posted to this group. Fredrik's parameters are below also. There have been some discussions on a theoretical basis about how much an image must be changed before one can copyright it as a new image. I think my image is enough different from Frederik's to qualify, but I would be curious what others think! I am asking this in the interest of our understanding each other better. I have no interest in causing any controversy. I am just interested in seeing what similarities and differences between the two could be thought to support a new copyright or not supporting such a claim. For each point in the plane, its distance to the inversion center, r_old, is computed. Along the line joining the field point to the inversion center, the distance from the inversion center to the inversion curve (rc) is found. Then, the actual inversion is: r_new * r_old = rc * rc, or r_new = rc * rc / r_old. The field point is moved from r_old (with some polar angle theta) to r_new (with the same angle). This moves points inside the curve to outside, and vice versa. Typically, a circle is used as the curve and its center as the inversion center. In that case, lines through the center of the circle are transformed back into themselves. Any other line is transformed into a circle, and the inversion circle is mapped to itself. Small circles near the inversion center get mapped into large circles, and vice versa. Many other kinds of curves can be used, so long as they are easy to compute. The algorithm below uses a general formula to generate the inversion curve: r = a * cos(b*t) + c, where r is the distance from the inversion center to the curve, t is the polar angle, and a, b, and c are user-defined constants. This formula can lead to a wide variety of curves. Some examples: a b c curve 0 0 1 circle of radius 1, centered at inversion center 1 1 0 circle of radius 1, not centered 1 1 1 cardioid 1 even 0 rose curve, with 2*b petals 1 odd 0 rose curve, with b petals To make this formula dynamic, there are options for moving the inversion center and changing the size of the curve each iteration. Otherwise, the iterations would be stuck in a loop of outside to inside, inside to outside, forever. The inversion center can move along a circle. The circle is centered at (0.0,0.0) but it has a user-specified radius (parameter "icc circle radius"). To move along the circle, the polar angle of the inversion center can be altered each iteration. The 3 ways to change the angle are listed in the "move options" pulldown menu. This parameter is for reference only; selecting one of the choices will have no effect on the computation. The 3 ways are: 1) none, 2) move counterclockwise (increase the angle), and 3) move clockwise (decrease the angle). Determine a sequence of increasing/decreasing that you want to implement and put the corresponding numbers (1, 2, 3) into the "map string" variable. The first action is represented by the rightmost digit, working forward to the last action (left digit). The sequence is repeated, one digit each iteration, until the maximum number of iterations is reached. For example, if the angle is to be constantly increased (say, from 0 to 45 degrees to 90, 135, 180, etc.), then the "map string" variable would simply be "2". To alternate between 0, 30 degrees, 0, and -30, use the string "2332". The actual degree measure of increase or decrease is the "icc angle increment" parameter. While the shape of the inversion curve is given by a, b, and c, its overall size can be controlled using the sizing parameters. There are 3 methods, listed in the "size options" pulldown. Like the other "types" pulldowns, this menu is for reference only and doesn't affect the computation. The 3 methods are: 1) none, 2) bigger, and 3) smaller. How much bigger or smaller depends on the "curve size factor" parameter, and is always referenced to the current size. The size factor starts out at 1.0. To have an iteration sequence where the curves were half the previous size, then half again, then twice the size, and repeating, the "size string" variable would be "233", and the "size factor" would be 2.0. Since inversions don't lend themselves to "escapes" like the quadratic map (Mandelbrot and Julia sets) does, all the pixels will be "inside" pixels with this formula. Iteration numbers can typically be set low (less than 100), especially when using the sizing options. The "Range" coloring method works well, showing how lines and circles get transformed. Also, try merging multiple layers in which only one type of parameter (curve shape, sizing sequence, or movement sequence) has been altered. Actually, this is just the explanatory copy. Next is the formula, then the sample upr's. Kerry ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kerry Mitchell lkmitch@primenet.com http://www.primenet.com/~lkmitch/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *** begin of addition to lkm.ufm *** comment { ; copyright Kerry Mitchell 01mar99 Baker's Transformation Baker's transformation is a two-dimensional map that takes a square and maps it back to a square. Specifically, take a square like this: AACC AACC BBDD BBDD then squish it in half horizontally while stretching it vertically to twice its original height: AC AC AC AC BD BD BD BD Finally, lop off the top half and place it to the right of the existing bottom half: BDAC BDAC BDAC BDAC This has the effect of taking the bottom of the original square and making it the left half of the new square, and making the top of the original square into the right side of the new one. It is a simple map that exhibits chaos and fractal characteristics, although its aesthetics leave something to be desired. When used over many iterations, it transforms the square into a series of vertical lines, without much apparent shape or structure. The formula below, based on the Baker's transformation, was designed to have a bit more visual appeal and flexibility. The map as illustrated above can be classified as "bottom to left". That is, it maps the bottom of the old square to the left of the new. There are 3 other ways this map can be expressed, based on which half of the original square gets mapped where: "left to bottom", "top to left", and "left to top". Using these alternatives in various sequences can yield images made of vertical lines, horizontal lines, squares, or rectangles. These maps are numbered 2 - 5, respectively, (1 is reserved for "none"), and are shown on the "map types" pulldown list. (This parameter is for reference only and does not affect the calculation.) With the "map string" variable, the order in which the maps are to be used can be specified. For example, to use map 3 ("top to left") followed by 4 ("left to top"), then 3, 4, 3, 4, etc., the map string would be "43". The first map to be used is the rightmost digit of the string, then work left. After the last entry in the string is used, the formula starts over, until the iterating is completed (due to reaching the maximum number of iterations). The Baker's transformation is implemented on a square, so a way is needed to break the complex (z) plane into squares. This is done with the round() function, which returns the rounded components of the complex input: round(3.9,5.2) = (4,5). When this rounded z is subtracted from the actual z, the result is a number whose components both vary from -0.5 to 0.5. Adding 0.5 to each creates a square from 0.0 to 1.0 in both directions. More precisely, this results in a square grid, as the round() function creates boundaries at every integer (-1.0, 3.0, etc.). The locations of these boundaries can be changed with the movement parameters. This would allow for taking a square from (0.0,0.0) to (1.0,1.0) on one iteration, and then a square from (0.5,-0.5) to (1.5,0.5) on the next, for example, giving overlapping squares. There are 9 movement types, listed on the "movement type" pulldown: 1: none 2: left 3: right 4: up 5: down 6: left & up 7: left & down 8: right & up 9: right & down The movement type numbers are assembled into the "move string" variable: to move left, then right, then up, then down, then repeat, the string would be "5432". This string works in the same basic fashion as the "map string", above. The degree of motion is controlled by the "movement amount" parameter. Using round() by itself results in a grid with 1.0 x 1.0 squares. The size of the squares can be controlled using the sizing parameters. There are 3 methods, listed in the "sizing types" pulldown. Like the other "types" pulldowns, this menu is for reference only and doesn't affect the computation. The 3 methods are: 1) none, 2) bigger, and 3) smaller. How much bigger or smaller depends on the "size factor" parameter, and is always referenced to the current size. The grid starts out at 1.0 on a side. To have an iteration sequence where the squares were twice the previous size, then twice again, then half, and repeating, the "size string" variable would be "322", and the "size factor" would be 2.0. Since the Baker's transformation doesn't lend itself to "escapes" like the quadratic map (Mandelbrot and Julia sets), all the pixels will be "inside" pixels with this formula. Iteration numbers can typically be set low (less than 100), especially when using the sizing options. The "Basic" coloring method works well, showing either the magnitude or polar angle of the iterate. Also, try merging multiple layers in which only one type of parameter (map sequence, sizing sequence, or movement sequence) has been altered.
