There are are a number of software solutions that come to mind. Compositing would be the most comprehensive and thorough approach to losing a background behind an object. Usually, mattes are generated to accompany the saved object. Process all your objects, combine them in one scene (transparent, I assume) and screen-save to your heart's content. Lots of graphics programs have masking, matte generating and color keying (colors outside the range of the scene being composited- -usually blue or green). The accuracy & quality of the processed image has to do with the cost of the software. If you can beg, borrow or steal a copy of Photoshop 5, it will serve you well. Everything under one roof. All this has been off the top of my head. I live in the country where graphics consist of Monday Night Football & South Park.
