Is there a shortcut like that for eliminating control points (besides edit-delete)? I've noticed that many of my fractint pars give gradients that have dozens of unnecessary control points. I'm assuming that it has to be tidied up the tedious way, one control point at a time, but I'm betting that someone here has more brain cells in operation than I do and knows a faster way. It seems like I have posted to the list since last year! (ha, ha.) Here are two very slow images that show a ribbon effect from the "angle" embossing method. They are so slow because they each have 17 (!) layers. Not for the impatient or low in ram. I'll post the images to alt.binaries.pictures.fractals, too. As Damien pointed out, there wasn't any reason for choosing a "computer- number", and it seemed to me much better not to choose a power of two -- because multiples of 100 are easier for us human beings. :) It would have to be more than 256 (to allow import of Fractint palettes), and less than 508 (for technical reasons). 500 seemed to make a pretty large gradient editor, so I chose 400. It's just annoying to select them seperately and copy > them out of my email prog one after the other. I agree it's annoying. The browser will be one of the first things to change for v3. > Concerning Center-Mag mode : > > Does anybody know how to calculate corner-coordinates out of c/m when you > don't know the aspect ratio ? And why does UF always assume an a_r of 4/3 > when it's possible to select others (e.g. 500x700) ? UF assumes the video mode in which you are running Windows has square pixels, so the real aspect ratio is 1/1. Also, it assumes your images have aspect ratio 4/3 (so they are 640x480, etc) when calculating the corner coordinates. When you resize a fractal, UF makes sure it isn't cropped: in other words, the magnification never gets higher. When you make the image taller, you'll see more of the top and bottom (parts that were previously hidden); when you make it wider, you'll see what's left and right of the image. These calculations are based upon a 4/3 default aspect ratio. If you are going to create an image which will be viewed on a screen with a different aspect ratio, say 320x200, you can do that by entering the proper width and height, and adding the Aspect Ratio transformation. The aspect ratio you have is 4/3=1.333333, the one you need is 320/200=1.6. So the correction is 1.33333 / 1.6 = 0.8333333. Enter this number as the Aspect Ratio in the input box, and the correct image is produced. Now that I write this, it seems to me that the Aspect Ratio transformation could use some improvements, because this is a rather cumbersome calculation. It would be much better if you could just enter the width and height of the final image. Aspect ratio issues and the viewwindows parameters in Fractint will also be addressed by the next revision. Please be patient... :) Best regards, Frederik. _______ ______ _____ ____ ___ __ _ post: send message to ultrafractal@icd.com unsub: send "unsubscribe" to ultrafractal-request@icd.com admin: send comments to ultrafractal-owner@icd.com From owner-ultrafractal@icd.com Fri Jan 1 11:28:49 1999 Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by rock.icd.com (8.9.1/8.9.1) id KAA17126 for ultrafractal-list; Fri, 1 Jan 1999 10:28:33 -0600 X-Authentication-Warning: rock.icd.com: majordomo set sender to owner-ultrafractal@icd.com using -f Received: from hawk.prod.itd.earthlink.net (hawk.prod.itd.earthlink.net [207.217.120.22]) by rock.icd.com (8.9.1/8.9.1) with ESMTP id KAA17112 for ; Fri, 1 Jan 1999 10:24:25 -0600 Received: from earthlink.net (ip183.washington13.dc.pub-ip.psi.net [38.30.214.183]) by hawk.prod.itd.earthlink.net (8.8.7/8.8.5) with ESMTP id IAA19141 for ; Fri, 1 Jan 1999 08:24:39 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: <368CF627.FD0D172F@earthlink.net> Date: Fri, 01 Jan 1999 11:21:59 -0500 From: Peter Jakubowicz Organization: None. I know that in MFC, before a menu item is displayed the class libraries give the application a chance to update the state of the item. I'd suggest using a similar feature in Delphi to flag an "in-menu" state, and have the inactive windows not update their title bars while the menu is open. The trick is to catch when the menus are closed, to clear the in-menu flag. Damien M. to work because UF can't find the parameter numsect in the Embossed General Julia formula. (there's no angle emboss type there either). I obviously don't have the most recent version of this formula and the one on Kerry's website doesn't contain it. I have the updated Embossed General Mandelbrot formula which was posted to the list. Would someone re-post or tell me where to get the current Julia? I have problems only with the 3D transform. As I can remember in the FractInt there was a possibility to visualise the fractal iterations count at a given point as a height (z coordinate) from the complex plane. Is here a such ability too? Can you post other sites too, where UF param files can be - found? ftp.fractalus.com includes formula collections from myself, Kerry Mitchell, and Luke Plant. These files are also available from the authors' own pages. You can visit Kerry's page here: http://www.primenet.com/~lkmitch/ Luke's pages are here: http://members.xoom.com/lukeplant/galindex.html You can also find Ultra Fractal information (and the challenges) at Janet Preslar's page: http://www.parkenet.org/jp/fractvty.htm Actual parameter files are not that common yet. I've posted a number to this list, so you can find them in the archives; as I mentioned, a collection is being built (not by me) and is nearly ready. Les St. Clair just posted his site's URL; you can find not only his UF stuff, but the parameters and formulas for the FractInt list as well. If you'd like the ORGFRM collection I referred to, you can get it from Spanky: http://spanky.triumf.ca/pub/fractals/programs/IBMPC/ORGFRM.ZIP - Jesus, I just started to pharse the letters of this newsgroup. I - finished with August and September. Can I throw them away ? I don't know why you'd need to keep them; the list is archived at ftp.fractalus.com so you can always retrieve old messages if you need them. Damien M. As I can remember in the > FractInt > there was a possibility to visualise the fractal iterations count at a given > point > as a height (z coordinate) from the complex plane. Is here a such ability > too? You can use POV-Ray or another raytracer to draw 3D fractal images from UF images (and with much better quality than with Fractint). Each pixel should be stored as a 16-bits word (in 2 bytes) to conserve memory space. The gradient indices are interpolated with 128 steps, so there are at most 512 (512 * 128 = 65536 = 2^16) index values in the gradient. Some values are reserved for solid colors and the background color, so that limits the maximum value to 508.
