I thought it was rather strange that they went by too quickly, since UF waits until the credit screen has been visible for at least two seconds. What would you suggest? Um, I wld/ spell them Status Bar and Tool Bar. Or, maybe, hyphenate them w/ lowercase b's. On the other hand, scholars have written entire monographs on whether Melville really intended to have a hyphen in his title (as opposed to the beast itself) Moby-Dick, so you might want to stear clear of those waters. _______ ______ _____ ____ ___ __ _ post: send message to ultrafractal@icd.com unsub: send "unsubscribe" to ultrafractal-request@icd.com admin: send comments to ultrafractal-owner@icd.com From owner-ultrafractal@icd.com Sun Nov 1 11:33:05 1998 Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by rock.icd.com (8.9.1/8.9.1) id LAA27495 for ultrafractal-list; Sun, 1 Nov 1998 11:33:05 -0600 X-Authentication-Warning: rock.icd.com: majordomo set sender to owner-ultrafractal@icd.com using -f Received: from mail0.mailsender.net (mail0.mailsender.net [209.132.1.30]) by rock.icd.com (8.9.1/8.9.1) with SMTP id LAA27492 for ; Sun, 1 Nov 1998 11:33:03 -0600 Received: from parkenet.org (24.92.70.79) by mail0.mailsender.net; 1 Nov 1998 09:13:31 -0800 Message-ID: <363C982A.98433EBB@parkenet.org> Date: Sun, 01 Nov 1998 11:19:38 -0600 From: Janet Preslar X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.06 [en] (Win95; U) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: ultrafractal@icd.com Subject: Re: [ultrafractal] UF Challenge #2 References: <363C6AA1.F199DEDB@csi.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-ultrafractal@icd.com Precedence: bulk Reply-To: ultrafractal@icd.com Frederik complained: > I'd vote for being able to change the gradients in the sample > parameter set. But it's irritating to search for the facts I need. Feeling somewhat anal-retentive today, I spend the last couple of hours putting this info into a free form database- Inforecall. Basically, you can find anything quickly by keyword search and every single word in the database is a keyword. It just occurred to me that others may also find this useful. If so, I can set up a quick and dirty web page where you can download it. Note that it does not include stray comments- only those related to UF including pars, etc. As I intended this database for my own use, not all the comments are attributed to the original poster. I can add this info from now on. If I post this database, I assume that nobody here will object to inclusion of their remarks. If you do, let me know and I'll edit you out of it. BTW, the version of Inforecall I used is available for free from the publisher. I don't have the web address right now but I'll include it on the web page if there is interest in the database. Challenge # 2 seemed like a good opportunity to finally get started. My initial impression was correct- UF is one "hot" program and a must-buy when the final version is released (but you people know that, don't you...) I'll have to get some UF images up on our web pages soon. In all deference to Damien, I won't say this fractal is ugly but I sure find it "beauty challenged"... (Damien, you'd better get something great out of this- you've got a rep to maintain :) After an admittedly short time I still haven't been able to get anything I like so have been reduced to just trying to get something a bit different than the original (it must be the pink.) If anyone is archiving these, please attribute this one to "anonymous"- I'm too embarrassed to put my name on it :) For better or mostly worse, here's my initial attempt. ps. I don't know if I cheated or not. It was said that we couldn't change the location but I figured standing on my head to view it wasn't changing the loc. so I horizontally flipped one of the layers. Anyhow, I'm off to see if I can figure out how UF works. It seems to be afflicted with "feature madness" but unlike so many programs, the features are actually useful and don't get in the way- good show Frederik. I have already used other solid colors in my earlier - parameter set. You should have told us so before. :) :) Well, my thinking was, if you couldn't change the colors, then allowing you to select any arbitrary color would be quite a loophole... thus restricting color choices to something already present in the gradient would be in keeping with the spirit of the challenge... Certainly I wouldn't want anyone to feel "disqualified" because of this. I expect this particular challenge was a bit too narrow, anyway; perhaps you will make the next one broader. :) Damien M. The windows tree control can only select one item at a time, unlike the list view control (Explorer won't let you select multiple directories on the left either). But it's irritating to search for the facts I need. (laugh) Yeah, digging up useful information from the midst of chatter can be difficult. The chatter is good, because it keeps this from being too humorless a forum, but if you're trying to catch up or find pertinent information it can be trying. Maybe one of these days I'll cook up something to search through the UF list archives based on keywords, but that will have to wait a bit, I think. :) - It just occurred to me that others may also find this useful. If so, I - can set up a quick and dirty web page where you can download it. Yes indeed, I think many people would find it useful. - If I post this database, I assume that nobody here will object to - inclusion of their remarks. If you do, let me know and I'll edit you - out of it. Just a reminder to anyone who might be a bit paranoid about that: this is a public list, in that anyone can sign up and read the messages, and the archives are *already* available via anonymous FTP. Jack is being very polite in asking first (he's a polite kind of guy) but if you don't want to be quoted, you probably shouldn't be posting here. :) One thing, though, Jack: if possible, please refrain from posting the e-mail addresses of the authors. As things stand now, spam web crawlers are very unlikely to extract the e-mail addresses of members of this list (or any other hosted at icd.com) but for a web page, that is another story. Damien M. Reply-To: ultrafractal@icd.com This is really Damien's fault. :-) He asked me to convert to UF a formula I had written for Fractint. Once I got into it, I decided that it needed a few more tweaks, bells, and whistles. It's included in my updated "lkm-pub-uf.zip", which can be found on my web page, or at: http://www.primenet.com/~lkmitch/lkm-pub-uf.zip Enjoy, Kerry ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kerry Mitchell lkmitch@primenet.com www.primenet.com/~lkmitch/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- comment { ; copyright Kerry Mitchell 04nov98 Statistics This started out with an article written by Stephen Ferguson on an analysis of fractal dimension, which he based on an algorithm by Holger Jaenisch. The formulas here modify Stephen's analysis and add other standard statistical measures. Since the measures are typically used with bounded datasets, this coloring method may be more applicable as an "inside" scheme, but there's nothing stopping a user from employing it as an "outside" scheme as well. The statistical measures implemented are: minimum, maximum, range, mean, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, and fractal dimension. All are defined only for real variables, so there are 4 choices for reducing the complex #z to a real number: real(#z), imag(#z), the magnitude of #z, and imag(#z)/real(#z). The last method is an attempt to capture the polar angle of #z, without the discontinuities involved in actually using the angle arg(#z). Once the choice of variable has been made, the first 3 measures are simple enough to compute. Simply monitor the orbit, updating the minimum and maximum as they change. Once the iteration has ceased, the range is just (maximum - minimum). The mean is computed by keeping a running sum of the variable, then dividing it by the number of iterations. The standard deviation is a measure of the spread of the data, and is defined in terms of the sum of the squared differences between each datum and the mean. This can also be computed by keeping a running sum of the square of the variable. This sum is used with the sum for the mean to determine the standard deviation. The coefficient of variation is a normalized standard deviation: it's the ratio of the standard deviation to the mean. Finally, the "fractal dimension" computed here is not the true fractal dimension, but an approximation to it. It's the standard deviation normalized by the range. } statistics { ; Kerry Mitchell 03nov98 ; ; Colors according to various ; statistical properties of the ; iterate. 'Tis a challenging little exercise. It seems like after looking at the results, the exercise is an anti-pink one. A question for the experience coloring formula writers. I'm finding the biggest challenge is that I basically have no clue as to what a particular coloring forumla is going to produce in the form of patterns, shapes, etc. What I was wondering was, is it possible/reasonable to produce a series of images that illustrate what a particular formula will produce given various settings of the various parameters and values? IOW, would it be possible to produce a catalog, of sorts, of images that one could look through to find a formula that produces the results that one has in mind when trying to create a fractal? Given all the options some of the formulas have, it may be a monumental task to develop such pars, but it might prove useful. Whadda yall think? Would such an idea be worth considering? I think that this challenge is particularly helpful for discovering what each of the formulas do. I have found that the best way to learn is to use the coloring methods on an unzoomed image, such as this one. And after some time of working this way, I am sort of able to predict what will happen with each one. Sort of. > IOW, would it be possible to produce a catalog, of sorts, of images that > one could look through to find a formula that produces the results that > one has in mind when trying to create a fractal? For me, the unknown is part of the fun. If I knew what I was going to get ahead of time, it would take some of the fun out of exploring, I think. (But that's not to say I wouldn't use a catalog if were available :-) And now two more pars . . . the first is not particularly great, but no one has done a just-inside image yet. The second (Scratched) is more unusual than attractive, but what the heck? I'm not really happy with what I used for the inside of this one as it doesn't go with or enhance the outside-- if anyone can suggest improvements, we can tag team this one.
