I've posted the JPEG at http://members.xoom.com/pfjakub/peter.html For some reason horizontal slats are superimposed over the image. monster { fractal: title="monster" width=640 height=480 author="Peter Jakubowicz" created="September 29, 1998" numlayers=2 layer: caption="New Layer 1" opacity=100 visible=yes alpha=no mergemode=multiply mapping: center=0.139648437499999999/0.46640625 magn=32 angle=0 numtransforms=1 transform: filename="dmj-pub.uxf" entry="dmj-Symmetry" p_mode="horz + vert" formula: filename="Examples.ufm" entry="Spider" maxiter=250 percheck=normal p_p1=0/0 p_bailout=4 inside: filename="dmj-pub.ucl" entry="dmj-Trap" density=4 transfer=linear repeat=yes p_trapshape="test2" p_trapcolor="distance" p_traptype="closest" p_trapcenter=0/0 p_aspect=1 p_angle=0 p_anglestep=0 p_diameter=1 p_threshold=0.25 p_gauss=0 p_movetrap=no outside: filename="dmj-pub.ucl" entry="dmj-Triangle" density=2 transfer=linear repeat=yes p_power=2 p_bailout=1E20 gradient: smooth=yes position=94 numnodes=4 index=95 color=7733247 index=164 color=13679556 index=245 color=2040849 index=397 color=16095221 layer: caption="Layer 1" visible=yes alpha=no mapping: center=-0.5103515625/1.16328125 magn=32 angle=0 numtransforms=1 transform: filename="dmj-pub.uxf" entry="dmj-Symmetry" p_mode="horz + vert" formula: filename="Examples.ufm" entry="Mandelbrot" maxiter=250 percheck=normal p_start=0/0 p_bailout=4 inside: filename="dmj-pub.ucl" entry="dmj-Trap" density=4 transfer=linear repeat=yes p_trapshape="test2" p_trapcolor="distance" p_traptype="closest" p_trapcenter=0/0 p_aspect=1 p_angle=0 p_anglestep=0 p_diameter=1 p_threshold=0.25 p_gauss=0 p_movetrap=no outside: filename="dmj-pub.ucl" entry="dmj-Triangle" density=2 transfer=linear repeat=yes p_power=2 p_bailout=1E20 gradient: smooth=no position=-193 numnodes=4 index=7 color=2622490 index=107 color=10210146 index=207 color=6118484 index=307 color=373962 } dmj-Trap { ; ; This single type replaces all of the trap types ; in dmj-pub.frm - and includes all the extra UF ; options, so they're more flexible, too. ; ; NOTE: SOME THINGS DO NOT WORK YET! ; - Spiral shapes need debugging. Is there a way to re-write it or disable the message? Also, Kerry, I've been meaning to ask you: most of your formulas included in the frac_ml file give the message "contains errors" in the parameter browser. Is this because of the way they are written, or perhaps because they are often notated with comments? Is there something I can do to make them work? The problem in the gauss formula is that the variables zmin and zmax are not necessarily initialized properly. If you would insert zmin = zmax = (0,0) in the init: section, all would be fine. If compiling a formula gives unexpected error or warning messages, you can learn more about them by highlighting the message in the Messages window and clicking the Help on Error button (the one that looks like ?!). > So I'm always going to have to close this little message box every time I use this > coloring method? Is there a way to re-write it or disable the message? The best way, of course, is to edit the formula so compiling it won't produce any warnings. For you, however, since you probably don't want to edit the formula, there exists an option in the Environment tab of the options dialog: Generate Warnings. If you uncheck it, the message will be disabled. > Also, Kerry, I've been meaning to ask you: most of your formulas included in the > frac_ml file give the message "contains errors" in the parameter browser. When Fractint loads a formula, it first removes all spaces in the formula. So "end if" then becomes "endif" and that's why Fractint accepted this formula. However, Ultra Fractal does not remove the spaces, since it needs to report the line and column number of an error. So, if you remove the spaces between "end" and "if" the formula will work fine. BTW, if you highlight a formula in the browser, and the preview window shows the (contains errors) message, just click OK to select the formula anyway. Then the messages window will show the error. By clicking the Trace button in the Messages window, UF will open the formula file in the editor and show where things went wrong. The other day I did as you suggested and clicked the trace button. When it took me to the "end if" I actually thought (all on my own!) that maybe the space was the problem. The problem is that Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V are reserved for copying fractal parameters in/out of the fractal window, and they work even when one of the property windows is active instead of the fractal window. I don't know if there's a solution to this one, but for now you can copy/paste by right-clicking in any input box and choosing Copy or Paste. How do I paste in a fractal from the mailing list? Whatever I select to copy, I get the message "Clipboard does not contain any fractal data" when I paste into UF. Plus, if you save a message to a file, is it necessary to save all the parameter, formula, etc sections into different files? The hard way: pasting the formula, colouring etc into the relevant new... windows in UF gets the job done, but there's no New - Parameter file and no New- Gradient that you can type/paste text into? Do these have to be created outside UF? Is there a batch generation technique? The volume of posted fractals doesn't seem too great at the moment but ... How do I open a fractint par as a fractal? I see .PAR listed in the file types of the open dialogue box, but I can't find a way to actually generate it. How do I convert a fractint map to a gradient? How do I apply a saved gradient to an open fractal? How do you map a gradient automatically to the full range min iters to max iters without repeating, like fractint's logmap? Does this require a colouring formula? Ranging from 1 to #maxiter looks fairly easy (with a formula). What about actual min-iters to max-iters? Some sections of the help don't seem to be there (Fractals, any of the dotted links, the How to use section, ...). I just get the message "the topic does not exist - contact the application vendor for an updated help file" and the Layers-introduction page is shown. Is this just a beta software thing? Is UF expected to be working with IE5 ? I tried it and I cant't advise you to do so... Well, in every dialog, the text misses, you cannot calculate a fractal, you can do just about nothing. I don't know if this is already known or if it's a bug or if it's specific to my PC or or or... I don't know if this is important for you, so I just posted this :-) Achim _______ ______ _____ ____ ___ __ _ post: send message to ultrafractal@icd.com unsub: send "unsubscribe" to ultrafractal-request@icd.com admin: send comments to ultrafractal-owner@icd.com From owner-ultrafractal@icd.com Tue Oct 6 01:11:41 1998 Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by rock.icd.com (8.9.1/8.9.1) id BAA01261 for ultrafractal-list; Tue, 6 Oct 1998 01:11:41 -0500 X-Authentication-Warning: rock.icd.com: majordomo set sender to owner-ultrafractal@icd.com using -f Received: from imo11.mx.aol.com (imo11.mx.aol.com [198.81.17.1]) by rock.icd.com (8.9.1/8.9.1) with ESMTP id BAA01258 for ; Tue, 6 Oct 1998 01:11:39 -0500 From: SmithRobB@aol.com Received: from SmithRobB@aol.com by imo11.mx.aol.com (IMOv16.10) id NESHa07924 for ; Tue, 6 Oct 1998 02:07:40 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: Date: Tue, 6 Oct 1998 02:07:40 EDT To: ultrafractal@icd.com Mime-Version: 1.0 Subject: Re: [ultrafractal] UF and IE5 Beta ? The Internet Explorer and UltraFractal do not have anything to do with each other. Since you mention IE5 I assume you are using Windows 95 or 98 for you operating system. After downloading (via IE) and installing UltraFractal it should run quite well under either Windows 95 or 98 (and IE5 is irrelevant). There is a possibility that there are other reason UF does not work, but it is not an IE problem. Plus, if you save a message to a file, is it necessary to > save all the parameter, formula, etc sections into different files? One way is to save the email as a .upr file. UF will ignore all the text and just read the parameters. For formulas, etc. posted to the list: highlight and Ctrl-C to copy to clipboard then use Edit/Paste (NOT Ctrl-V) to paste into a new formula or coloring method, etc. As Frederik just informed me, Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V are reserved *within* UF to copying and pasting the fractal image itself. So when you want to copy/paste text, right-click or use the Edit menu. > Is there a batch generation technique? The volume of posted fractalsdoesn't > seem too great at the moment but ... The parameter browser shows you a thumbnail pretty quickly so you can see if you want to see it in larger res. Also, under Options/Options/Defaults, you can have UF automatically render at whatever resolution you want (over-riding the par res). I have a fast machine, but so far, nothing takes very long even at 640 x 480. > How do I open a fractint par as a fractal? UF does read formulas, though. > How do I convert a fractint map to a gradient? No way directly, but if you check out my gradient hints page, you can create a similar one pretty easily. I bet by the time of the full release it'll all be there. :) Joe, I found UF a little different to learn if you're coming from another program, but in my case that was because I was trying to make things too hard. I assumed that there was a convoluted way to accomplish things and everything, so far, has turned out to be very simple really. Just keep asking questions and I promise it will be worth it. Hope this helped some. Whatever I select to > copy, I get the message "Clipboard does not contain any fractal data" when I > paste into UF. Plus, if you save a message to a file, is it necessary to > save all the parameter, formula, etc sections into different files? Currently, parameter files contain all fractal and gradient settings, but they don't contain the formulas used. Instead, the transformations/formulas/ coloring algorithms are referenced from within the parameter set, just like in Fractint parameter sets. So, to be able to paste in a parameter set, you must have all required formula and coloring files. So, first copy the formulas to separate files, then highlight the entire parameter set in your email software, copy it to the Clipboard. Then in UF, create a fractal and choose Edit|Paste to paste the parameter set in. Check if you have the latest beta (build date Oct 4). It indicates which formulas are missing (if any) and allows you to search for them. Be sure to copy the entire set: name { ... } > The hard way: pasting the formula, colouring etc into the relevant new... > windows in UF gets the job done, but there's no New - Parameter file and no > New- Gradient that you can type/paste text into? Do these have to be created > outside UF? As I told you above, you can create them by pasting them into a fractal window, then use File|Save Parameters to save the parameter set. Alternatively, you can paste gradients and parameter sets to files in the browsers (use Manage| Parameters etc to open a browser). > Is there a batch generation technique? Ranging from 1 to #maxiter looks fairly easy (with a > formula). What about actual min-iters to max-iters? That's a typical application for a coloring formula. By the way, *everything* in UF requires a coloring formula. It's just that you're usually not aware of it. It's not possible to let the formula automatically use the min number of iterations, but you can easily write a formula that takes it as a parameter: MapOnce { int range = #maxiter - @miniter #index = (#numiter - @miniter) / range default: param miniter caption = "Min. iterations" default = 0 min = 0 endparam } > Some sections of the help don't seem to be there (Fractals, any of the > dotted links, the How to use section, ...). I just get the message "the > topic does not exist - contact the application vendor for an updated help > file" and the Layers-introduction page is shown. Is this just a beta > software thing? Right. I need to write large parts of the help file still. Mind you, my machine configuration was all over the place and the reformat was needed anyway, so I don't think such a drastic solution means much. I suppose the way to handle the IE5 problem is to wait for the next beta, supposedly out fairly soon, which is a "consumer preview". If UF has problems with this beta whatever is wrong will have to be bottomed out as a lot of people are going to install the IE beta and run into trouble with UF. I note that some other programs, such as the beta of HomeSite 4.0 (http://www.allaire.com/), quite explicitly say that they should not be used with preview versions of IE5 as they'll behave unpredictably ...
