Here is a sample parameter set that will probably help you to get started. It contains two layers. The background layer contains the Fractint formula in the example formula file colored with blue shades. The top layer contains a plain Mandelbrot set with smooth coloring. Its gradient is entirely white, the Opacity is set to 100% and the merge mode to Normal, so you would expect the background layer to be hidden, and the image to be a Mandelbrot set in black and white. However, the alpha channel of the top layer is enabled (in the Fractal Properties tool), and the alpha channel itself contains a small dip \/ so it makes a portion of the top layer transparent. (The alpha channel always makes a layer more transparent.) Try to drag the trackbar in the alpha channel editor to the left and to the right and watch the changes. Now that I've finished my contest entries (just in time!), I can show you the ones that didn't make the final cut ;). I like these, too, but the best part is how much I learned about UF just from playing around. Mostly these pars are just what I came up with while experimenting with the various coloring methods. The Eyeball series includes just a few of the (did you say 8000, Damien?) Orbit Trap possibilities. So here are a bunch of pars and the necessary formula files to go with them. With Steve Ferguson's permission and encouragement, I'm transfering the TieraZon2 formulas into UF syntax. The first complete one (TZ20509.ufm) is included below. Please let me know if something doesn't work properly! I hadn't thought about doing that -- thanks for the hint. But I can always delete from the parameter browser, which I like a lot. One thing I can't do that I'd like to, though, is create a new (empty) .upr file in the browser. I had made a bunch of what I call textures -- images that might be good later on as a layer of another image. I tried to create a textures.upr file in which to copy the pars. When I click the "Add File" button and try to enter that name, UF says the file cannot be found and doesn't offer to create it. So I either have to go to Explorer and add the folder or open one of the images and re-save it to the new folder (which it lets me create then). Is it possible to change this? > BTW: It's Frederik, without a "c". :) Sorry 'bout that. I typed it from memory (which is obviously not photographic). (When you switch around between different fractal programs, each of which has its own and very different coloring methods, the learning curve seems to get bumpy.) In all the playing I've done with UF in the past week, I've learned a lot and offered to share some hints with this user. What started as an email of hints turned into an .html page with screen shots, etc. which can be found at: http://www.ParkeNet.org/jp/ufgradienthints.html (Beware -- it is very full of graphics and slow-loading) Probably everyone on this list already knows this stuff, but in case there are any other newbies lurking, I offer it to all. It is extremely basic, but maybe it will be of some help. Comments, corrections, etc., are very welcome. (You'll notice large holes in my grasp of some of the terminology!) I'm open to better descriptions of the shade . . . > It's kind of neat to add random colors, too, rather than picking colors. I haven't tried that enough. Frederik, the more I learn to use all of UF's features, the more I appreciate all the time and energy you have spent in making this such a versatile program. I discover and learn new things every time I use it and think each time how impressed I am with what you've created. You and whomever else helped brainstorm this program's features obviously had a clear idea of where you wanted to go with the program. I'm sorry that I couldn't have been a fly on the wall during those discussions, just to observe what would have been, to me, a fascinating process. I'm sorry that I couldn't have been a fly on the wall during >those discussions, just to observe what would have been, to me, a fascinating >process. Most of the ideas in UF2 are from Damien. About a year ago, I was starting to write a Win95 version of UF1.1, and wanted to subscribe to the infinite fractal loop. When I asked Damien for some more ideas for new features, he sent a lengthy document with ideas for multiple layers, transformation and coloring formulas, etc. I was thrilled; I had never used a coloring formula before. :) But strange enough most of his ideas matched mine (like a curve-based gradient editor, and a better formula compiler). We had some arguments though :) but in December 1997 I started working on UF2 in its current form. The first betas 1-2 were pretty limited, only showing the interface and the gradient editor, but as of beta 3 the formula compiler was introduced. But the design was well thought-out from the beginning and few changes were needed while writing the program; that's probably what you meant. I haven't kept any backups of the discussions Damien and I had, but perhaps Damien has. Your images probably look like this in the file: then you can change that to: Of course, you must first measure the dimensions of the image, otherwise it will appear stretched. The benefit of this is that the browser can show the text on the page while the images are still loading (it knows how to format the text around the images). You have to do this for all the images on a page, otherwise it won't work. >Probably everyone on this list already knows this stuff, but in case there are >any other newbies lurking, I offer it to all. I like your page, and I enjoyed seeing you had used all shortcut keys. :) Here are some more features of the gradient editor you might not have found out about: * You can select multiple control points by dragging a rectangle around them, or pressing Ctrl+A. Then, you can drag them together to the left or to the right, or delete them by pressing Ctrl+Del. * You can insert a new control point by Ctrl+clicking inside the editor. * The right-button menu offers a few more choices than inserting and deleting: Eyedropper will let you pick the color from any open fractal window, and Random randomizes the selected color. (If you select multiple control points, only the leftmost will be affected.) * The entire gradient can be randomized by pressing Ctrl+1, Ctrl+2 or Ctrl+3. * To adjust the colors in the entire gradient, choose Adjust from the Gradient menu. This invokes a new dialog with sliders to adjust the red, green, blue etc. parts of all control points. (Call it a bug if you like ). To get to the problem, I shall first explain how the merging mechanism in UF works. There are a number of layers, and these are merged from bottom to top (starting with the bottom layer, and working gradually to the top layer). So the merge routine takes the bottom layer, and the layer above it, and merges these two together. Then, it takes the result and the next layer, and merges these, and so on, until all layers have been merged. So, at any time, the merge routine actually has two images it has to merge: the result of all preceding merge operations (the background), and the layer that is being merged (the current layer). It performs the following operations, in this order: 1) it reads the merge mode of the current layer, and produces a temporary image which is the result of the selected merge operation (like multiply or difference) on the background and the current layer. 2) it uses the opacity value in the Fractal Properties tool to merge this temporary image with the background image. If the opacity is 100%, the result is equal to the temporary image, and if the opacity is 0%, the result is equal to the background image (thus discarding the current layer). Now, when a layer contains an alpha channel, there should be a third pass between 1) and 2), where the temporary image is merged with the background image according to the alpha channel of the current layer, and the result is put into the temporary image again. And here's where the problem comes in. This third pass isn't done between step 1 and 2, but instead *before* step 1. For example, if you have the alpha channel of the top layer set to black (so the layer should become fully transparent), it should be discarded, and the fractal window should show the underlying layers. When the merge mode is set to Normal, UF does this. But when it is set to Difference, for example, the fractal window becomes black, since in the alpha channel step, the current layer is replaced by the background image. Then the Difference merge mode is applied to two identical images (the background and the background) and the result is a black image (since there is no difference). Of course it is easy to fix the problem, but it would make old images using alpha channels look totally different. In its current shape, it's rather difficult to explain how the alpha channel works -- as you now have found out yourself. :) Please let me hear what you think about this -- and if you did use the alpha channel feature a lot in existing parameter sets. Best regards, Frederik. _______ ______ _____ ____ ___ __ _ post: send message to ultrafractal@icd.com unsub: send "unsubscribe" to ultrafractal-request@icd.com admin: send comments to ultrafractal-owner@icd.com From owner-ultrafractal@icd.com Thu Sep 10 15:07:39 1998 Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by rock.icd.com (8.9.1/8.9.1) id PAA13368 for ultrafractal-list; Thu, 10 Sep 1998 15:07:39 -0500 X-Authentication-Warning: rock.icd.com: majordomo set sender to owner-ultrafractal@icd.com using -f Received: from smtp1.globalserve.net (smtp1.globalserve.net [209.90.144.2]) by rock.icd.com (8.9.1/8.9.1) with ESMTP id PAA13365 for ; Thu, 10 Sep 1998 15:07:37 -0500 Received: from jval (dialin856.toronto.globalserve.net [209.90.133.93]) by smtp1.globalserve.net (8.9.1/8.9.1) with SMTP id QAA27442 for ; Thu, 10 Sep 1998 16:05:46 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from jval@globalserve.net) Message-ID: <002701bddcf6$512fe200$6a885ad1@jval> From: "Jack Valero" To: Subject: Re: [ultrafractal] Undesired alpha channel behaviour? I have decided to fix the bug as soon as possible; this means that beta 7 will not be completely compatible with beta 6, but for a beta release, that's acceptable. The good news is: I found a way to convert some old images using the alpha channel with non-Normal merge modes. It only works when the layer using the alpha channel is just above the bottom layer, and its merge mode is not Overlay, Red, Green or Blue. Ok, suppose you have two layers, and the top layer uses the alpha channel: [top layer ] opacity = X, mergemode = M [bottom layer] Then you duplicate until you get: [bottom layer] opacity = 100-X, mergemode = Normal [bottom layer] opacity = 100, mergemode = M [top layer ] opacity = 100, mergemode = Normal [bottom layer] I agree it's not perfect, but it may help you (Peter) to let your old parameter sets work with the new beta 7. Regarding keeping a non-expiring version of beta 6: I'm afraid that won't be possible. I don't want to have old versions floating around somewhere, and there's another good reason: I haven't kept the source code for beta 6 (since there wasn't any reason to keep it), so I'm not able to compile a version without expiration check now. And I can't override the check in the released beta. Another possiblity would be to have two different alpha channel modes in beta 7. I'm strongly against this, since it would be rather hard to explain, it serves no purpose other than backwards compatibility, and I don't like to be confronted with my old errors again and again. :) Compare the cosxx function in Fractint, which duplicates an old bug. I certainly want to avoid such a situation in Ultra Fractal. Me too. :) Often you can recognize them by the smooth coloring (in contrast to 256-color images) in combination with advanced coloring algorithms. But you never know: some images looking UF-like may actually be produced by custom programs written by artists. I haven't really looked at Tiera-Zon yet, so I don't know how a typical Tiera-Zon image looks. :) But the number of entries is astounding, and it sure takes a lot of time to judge them all. For the next contest (?), I'd suggest to limit the number of entries per artist to one to keep the voting manageable. I assume you all understand how normal fractal formulas work. Here is the formula for the Mandelbrot set: Mandelbrot { init: z = 0 loop: z = sqr() + #pixel bailout: |z| < 4 } Here is some pseudocode to show how the statements are executed. It uses the predefined variable #maxiter (which contains the maximum number of iterations, set in the Formula tab of the Layer Properties tool). execute statements in INIT section iter = 0 ; initialize number of iterations REPEAT execute statements in LOOP section iter = iter + 1 ; increase number of iterations UNTIL (expression in BAILOUT section becomes FALSE) OR (iter == #maxiter) So the LOOP section is always executed at least once, and at most #maxiter times. Now here is a typical coloring formula: Coloring { init: float closest = 1e100 ; a very large number loop: float d = |#z| ; compute magnitude of #z IF d < closest ; smaller than closest? closest = d ; then update closest ENDIF final: ; compute index into gradient #index = 0.5 * closest } In the INIT section, variables can be initialized. The LOOP section is executed together with the LOOP section in the fractal formula; the z variable used in the fractal formula can be accessed here using #z. Finally, the statements in the FINAL section are executed to calculate an index into the gradient (0-1). The result must be assigned to #index. In the FINAL section, the coloring formula can read the number of iterations executed using #numiter. Here is the pseudocode to show how the statements in the coloring formula are executed: execute statements in INIT section of fractal formula execute statements in INIT section of coloring formula iter = 0 ; initialize number of iterations REPEAT execute statements in LOOP section of fractal formula execute statements in LOOP section of coloring formula iter = iter + 1 ; increase number of iterations UNTIL (expression in BAILOUT section becomes FALSE) OR (iter == #maxiter) #numiter = iter execute statements in FINAL section of coloring formula A good way to learn how to use coloring formulas is to experiment with the formula given. It is one of the options in Damien's Orbit Traps formula. Here are some possible variations: Coloring2 { init: float closest = 1e100 ; a very large number loop: float d = |#z| ; compute magnitude of #z IF d < closest ; smaller than closest? closest = d ; then update closest ENDIF final: ; now take into account the number of iterations executed #index = 0.5 * closest + 0.01 * #numiter } Coloring3 { init: float closest = 1e100 ; a very large number complex closest_value = (0,0) loop: float d = |#z| ; compute magnitude of #z IF d < closest ; smaller than closest? closest = d ; then update closest closest_value = #z ENDIF final: ; use the angle of the closest value of #z #index = 0.01 * abs(atan(imag(closest_value) / real(closest_value)) * 180/pi) } A list of the predefined variables can be found in Examples.ufm distributed with beta 6. IF (@trapshape == 0) ; point d = cabs(z2) IF (@trapshape == 14) ; circle d = cabs(#z-@trapcenter) _______ ______ _____ ____ ___ __ _ post: send message to ultrafractal@icd.com unsub: send "unsubscribe" to ultrafractal-request@icd.com admin: send comments to ultrafractal-owner@icd.com From owner-ultrafractal@icd.com Sun Sep 13 22:12:59 1998 Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by rock.icd.com (8.9.1/8.9.1) id WAA24392 for ultrafractal-list; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 22:12:59 -0500 X-Authentication-Warning: rock.icd.com: majordomo set sender to owner-ultrafractal@icd.com using -f Received: from goose.prod.itd.earthlink.net (goose.prod.itd.earthlink.net [207.217.120.18]) by rock.icd.com (8.9.1/8.9.1) with ESMTP id WAA24389 for ; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 22:12:56 -0500 Received: from default (ip83.washington11.dc.pub-ip.psi.net [38.30.47.83]) by goose.prod.itd.earthlink.net (8.8.7/8.8.5) with SMTP id UAA23612 for ; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 20:09:33 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <3.0.5.32.19980913230718.007a6100@earthlink.net> X-Sender: pfjakub@earthlink.net X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Light Version 3.0.5 (32) Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 23:07:18 -0400 To: ultrafractal@icd.com From: Peter Jakubowicz Subject: Re: [ultrafractal] transforms In-Reply-To: <199809130623_MC2-5951-E5AD@compuserve.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Sender: owner-ultrafractal@icd.com Precedence: bulk Reply-To: ultrafractal@icd.com Frederik, >I know it's possible to write a transformation to do this, but it takes >some thought. :) Perhaps you can first think of how the M-set should be >mapped onto the torus (where should it appear). Or you can start with an >easier shape, like a cube (which could be rotated). What I want to do is project the fractal onto a torus and then straighten that surface out on the screen, so it would wrap around both the top and bottom and sides of the monitor. I don't think the result wld/ resemble the M-set as we know it, tho. Hmm, maybe I can find a way to do this in a boo
