No, actually it's not always checked by default, but the problem is you do have to check it, uncheck, and then check it again to get it to work: this can get kind of confusing with multiple layers. The palette portion fulfills the same role as the color density; the reason it is there is so that if you set the color density to 1, you can set the palette portion to the decomp= value in your FractInt PAR and match the results. If you're not trying to match a FractInt PAR, set the palette portion to 256 and leave it there. 256 is equal to the full palette range; that is, the entire range of angles will correspond to a single sweep of the gradient. Note that this coloring method works best with divergent fractals, which tend to produce final z values all over the complex plane. Convergent fractals don't do this, and you'd probably be better off using the Paul Carlson Atan, which colors based on the direction from z to the previous z. Damien M. The palette portion isn't quite the same as color density; it actually represents the portion, in 1/256ths, of the palette (gradient) to use. This is consistent with FractInt's decomp option. So if you use portion of 128, only the first half of the gradient will be used, but repeated twice. What I wld >like to do is take a previous and copy the various layers to a new image, >to see how it wld look w/ that particular coloring scheme, but without the >formulas. It seems I can only copy and paste them with the formulas, or if >I delete the formulas, I end up w/ just a plain black image. But the coloring scheme depends on the formula. The resulting image largely depends on the formula used, unless the coloring scheme doesn't take into account the values of #z and #index, in which case the formula is just ignored. So how do you envision a fractal without a fractal formula? I think what you want to do is to try different fractal formulas with the same coloring scheme. Suppose layer1 of fractal1 has the coloring scheme you want, while layer1 of fractal2 has the formula (and location) you want. Then, create a new layer in fractal2, copy layer1 of fractal1 and paste it to this new layer. Then, copy the formula of layer1 in fractal2 and paste it to the new layer, next, copy the location of layer1 in fractal2 and paste it to the new layer. Delete layer1 and you're ready. I hope this answers your question. >When one loads a new formula, the adjust iterations automatically box is >checked by default in the properties form; however, it doesn't -- you have >to uncheck and then check it again to get it to increase the iterations to >increase as you zoom. It makes me smile. The Options dialog is just what the doctor ordered. Thank you, Frederik. I started some new fractals rendering overnight, at large size; if they turn out to be decent (as I suspect they might) then I'll post the parameters here, of course. But I noticed that I had forgotten to turn the screen saver off, so course when I came in this morning I found my fractals were scarcely two-thirds finished. Oops. I'm trying to decide if I should simply remember to disable the screen saver (a real-time 20,000-point IFS morpher with fire effect, looks cool) or if I should ask for an option in UF to not permit screen saving while rendering. :) I did have one thought, though, regarding transformation formulas. These formulas serve one purpose: to alter #pixel before the fractal formula gets hold of it. However, some time ago Earl Hinrichs was experimenting with a technique he called orbit boosting; he was gracious enough to explain it to me, and I adapted it to some FractInt formulas. The basic idea behind orbit boosting is that you select a region of the complex plane, much like an orbit trap, and whenever z enters that region, you alter z in some fashion. I messed with a number of z-altering schemes, with varying results. I know that at some point I asked for a boost formula type, and you indicated it would have to wait. Well, it's occurred to me that the easiest way to implement this would be to allow transformation formulas to have a loop: section, and the ability to modify #z. Then I can write a boost formula, and stack as many boost regions as I like onto any fractal. I can do this right now by just writing a fractal formula with boosting, but then I have to write a separate version for each base fractal formula. This isn't important, it was just a thought I had today. :) Damien M. Good. :) >I'm trying to decide if I should simply remember to disable the screen saver I'd vote for that. :) About orbit boosting: - Although orbit boosting could be implemented nicely in a loop section of the transformation formulas (it would be rather slow though), it severely complicates the transformation concept. Right now transformation formulas are perfectly understandable, and a logical concept. It seems a pity to waste this amount of clarity by adding a new feature where it doesn't belong (the same applied to the recompile button on the messages window). - In my opinion, taking the value of z inside the loop and altering it is largely the responsibility of the formula. - To create a new formula type is overkill, I think. There are already three different formula types; orbit boosting can just as well be implemented in a fractal formula; the layer properties tool is complicated enough as it is right now, etc. In other words, I'd like to finish the program more or less in its current shape. I'm already getting a headache while trying to let it work without too many errors right now. :) Best regards, Frederik. _______ ______ _____ ____ ___ __ _ post: send message to ultrafractal@icd.com unsub: send "unsubscribe" to ultrafractal-request@icd.com admin: send comments to ultrafractal-owner@icd.com From owner-ultrafractal@icd.com Sun Aug 16 05:52:32 1998 Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by rock.icd.com (8.9.1/8.9.1) id FAA24939 for ultrafractal-list; Sun, 16 Aug 1998 05:52:32 -0500 X-Authentication-Warning: rock.icd.com: majordomo set sender to owner-ultrafractal@icd.com using -f Received: from arl-img-8.compuserve.com (arl-img-8.compuserve.com [149.174.217.138]) by rock.icd.com (8.9.1/8.9.1) with ESMTP id FAA24934 for ; Sun, 16 Aug 1998 05:52:31 -0500 Received: (from mailgate@localhost) by arl-img-8.compuserve.com (8.8.6/8.8.6/2.12) id GAA22578 for ultrafractal@icd.com; Sun, 16 Aug 1998 06:58:35 -0400 (EDT) Date: Sun, 16 Aug 1998 06:58:04 -0400 From: Frederik Slijkerman Subject: [ultrafractal] bugs To: "INTERNET:ultrafractal@icd.com" Message-ID: <199808160658_MC2-563D-409@compuserve.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-MIME-Autoconverted: from quoted-printable to 8bit by rock.icd.com id FAA24935 Sender: owner-ultrafractal@icd.com Precedence: bulk Reply-To: ultrafractal@icd.com Kees, >A shortcut doesn't work. Yes. Your bailout is set high enough (Triangle Inequality requires a high bailout to look good) but you also need to set the exponent on the outside method to match your formula (that is, 3). The TI method uses the smoothed-iterations formula to interpolate between the average of the two last iterations, so like the smoothed-iterations formula, it needs to know the general exponent of the fractal formula to calculate the partial iteration value accurately. Currently, no. Digests are a major pain to set up with Majordomo, so I haven't done it for any of the lists I'm running here. I'd almost rather write a new listserver program. :-) But I don't have time for that. Normally the traffic on this list isn't high enough to worry about a digest version. - Also, I am new to Ultra Fractal and was wondering if non-mathematician - newbie types are welcome here. YES! You are welcome here. There isn't usually too much math talk here either; mainly we just complain to Frederik when things don't work quite right, and post parameter sets when we find cool stuff. :) Damien M. Perhaps the problem is related to the fact you're very close to the maximum zooming depth in UF. Since the .ufr file is > 2000k, would you mind sending me the first ~ 2k? You could just load the .ufr file in a suitable text editor and copy the parameter information (saved to the .ufr in text format). BTW, it's not necessary to compress .ufr files with pkzip. They are compressed with the same algorithm, so it's unlikely they would become much smaller. It seems like a good idea. >Hehe. Yes, finish the program. You're gonna have a big enough task >documenting this sucker. Right. But currently I have found some new bugs in the fractal calculation mechanism, and I'm not happy with the way it is implemented right now, so I decided to rewrite it. :) I want to have a separate update thread that is running all the time. Most of the time it would be blocked; it wakes up every 300 ms if a fractal is calculated to update a part of the fractal window, and it wakes up if the gradient etc. is changed. This enables me to remove some lousy code I wouldn't want to bother you with. :) The documentation is not too much work; most of the dialogs can be covered with context-sensitive help, which can be written quickly. Furthermore there will be a general introduction, explaining the layer and formula concepts, a compiler reference (which would be fairly detailed) and a how-to section. I was surprised by "Liquid" -- it really looks like water! Unfortunately I couldn't try most of the other parameter sets because they use new coloring algorithms I don't have yet -- I'll download them today.
