You seem to be insisting that our model of the functioning of our physiology is more real than the experience of consciousness itself. Indeed! I though this was one of my 'original' ideas, and the way I put it it is the universal 'intelligence' (totally inadequate word but I cant find a better one) that 'incarnates' in any suitably complex system. This is a paragraph I nearly submitted during an earlier discussion of AI here... I have an aproach to the concept of artificial intelligence that I have not heard anyone else present. It starts with the premise that the universe itself is predisposed to intelligence by its basically meaningful nature. This leads me to propose that to "create" artificial intelligence one need merely create a compex enough system for the manipulation of information, (a physical body if you will), and the inherent intelligence of the universe will proceed to use it as a vehicle for expressing itself. End quote. >Only unless the >behaviour of suitably complex systems is impossible to explain using the >same materialistic laws that apply to other systems. > >I've yet to be convinced that that consciousness is such a behaviour. You know, to hypothesise the continued existance of a being such as yourself after the temporal destruction of your physical form does not automatically lead to the symplistic modern western idea of a 'soul'. This idea seems heavily Christian influenced, and basically to be some sort of equivalent to the 'body' we experience in dreams, and is usually called by ocultists the 'astral form'. This seems to me to show again how strongly identified with the body our culture is, in that it imagines life without the body as requiring a psuedo body. Eastern ideas as I have understood them usually involve the destruction of many sublte layers of the individual as a natural part of the death process. Certainly the cultural personality, sexual conditioning, habits, basically the whole of what we call the mind, is usually understood to dissolve soon after the separation from the body. What then you may ask goes on? This is much argued about, especially among Buddhists who generally deny the absolute existance of the self as anything but illusion anyway. The main points seem to be that who you are is somehow deeper than all these things you identify yourself with, and that whatever it is, it carries its karma with it into another story. I like to think of it as the reappearance of the unresolved themes of a life. Until the full expression of your being has been found the universe will continue to develop the theme of you in its own inscrutibly aesthetic ways. >>It seems to me that when as many as possible preconceptions are stripped >>away, what is left is >>is a mystery that is beyond mental comprehension. >> >_Cogito ergo sum_ never convinced me of anything either. This is fine (and even desirable), if >comprehension is not the goal of the exercise. You seem to be saying here that there is nothing beyond the mind, at least nothing that can in any way 'comprehend', and I disagree. The observer of the mind does not seem to me to be a part of the mind, (this is a crucial point), and though the mind cannot understand this, I can, in some indescribable nonmental way. >>What if we are the screen upon which all perceptions of dreams and waking >>experiences appear, all thoughts, all sensations. It seems a bit strange, and actually a bit annoying, to see full sunlight streaming in the window as I compose my FOTD for the day, but 6:30pm isn't really that early when one considers that six months from now it will have been dark for 2 hours already at this time of day. Today's fractal is a picture of a fractal. And a picture of a fractal is a fractal. The fractal picture is the fractal object. The picture is a picture of something that does not exist. I therefore named the picture of today's fractal "This is a Fractal", a title which is at the same time absolutely true and absolutely meaningless. The parent formula of today's image is a more exaggerated form of the parent of yesterday's image. To find this exaggerated image I added 0.1 part of Z^0.1 to 1000 parts of Z^1000. In fractals such as this, the baby 'brots are buried deep, but they are there, and the extra effort it takes to find them is usually well rewarded. An immediate question is, "how does one find these deeply buried Minibrots that lurk in the fractals created by the M-Mix4 formula?" My first response would be to look for the critical areas of the fractals. In fractals where two powers of Z are mixed, perfect midgets often appear in only small areas. These critical areas most often lie on the X-axis, less often on the Y-axis, but frequently anywhere in the image. The critical areas of fractals can quickly be recognized by the presence of complete and unbroken quadratic-type Mandelbrot buds -- but features of the most bizarre shape sometimes contain Minibrots. The only sure way to find the baby 'brots that might exist in a particular area of a particular fractal is to go and look. Check the areas where two symmetrical features come together. If the two features eventually become connected by a flat bridge, there is little chance that midgets lie nearby. If the symmetrical features keep going, growing ever smaller but not changing, you are most likely exploring a bottomless pit. When the two symmetrical features split into four, and then eight, you are in luck. Toggle into and out of color cycling mode, and if the inside has been set to 0, 254, or 255, the midget will be seen blinking at the center. Although today's parameter file draws in only a few minutes, the JPEG image file has been courteously posted to: and to Paul's great web site at: The weather here at Fractal Central today was what we call HHH, that is hazy, hot and humid. With a temperature of 90F 32C, it was perfect for seeking fractals -- as long as one stayed indoors in an air-cooled room to seek those fractals. My thoughts about the philosophy of the unspeakable are ripening, but they are not yet ready to harvest. Actually, Narada's letter, which I read earlier today, has given me a few new insights into the unspeakable, and I need time to incorporate those new ideas into my cache of the topic. Now it's time to shut down the fractal shoppe for the evening, and watch the sunset. If I'm smart, I'll avoid the war news for the rest of the evening. And as always, I will return in top form tomorrow at this same time, (or perhaps a bit later). Until then, take care, and I once heard a wise old sage tell that the world will end the day after we find the last fractal. (Therefore, I'm not worried about doomsday!) The temperature of 93F, 34C with 66 percent humidity was too much for outside labor, but just right for the inside activity of seeking and finding elusive fractals. As I wrote in yesterday's FOTD, when two powers of Z are added together in a single formula, and a critical plane calculated, the resulting fractal will have the characteristics of a critical fractal in only certain limited areas. Today's rather unusual image vividly illustrates this peculiarity. I have named the picture, "Mandelbrot Phantasm" because of the ghostly, half-obscured mirror-image in the lower right quadrant, which reflects the well-defined bud in the upper left quadrant. The upper left bud lies in a critical area of the parent fractal; the lower right bud lies in a non-critical area. Although I have not yet searched, I know that the area around the upper left bud is filled with midgets, some with quite unusual patterns. Searching for midgets in the lower right half of the picture would be futile. Curiously enough, far beyond the right edge of today's image, we run into another critical area. I have already found some interesting midgets in this unseen area, and tomorrow's FOTD may show one of them. Today's bifurcated parameter file runs in Fractint 19.6 on a 233mhz Pentium in the not-too-fast time of 13 minutes. It would take a couple hours on a slower 486, (if anyone still has one of those relics, [no offense intended if you do]). The JPEG image has therefore been posted to Usenet at: and to Paul's web site on the WWW at: I have lots of philosophy on the tip of my tongue, unfortu- nately, due to the oppressive weather, it doesn't want to transfer itself to the tips of my fingers. The revelation might come tomorrow, when the weather is due to be a lot more conducive to deep thinking. And then again, the enlightenment might not come for several days yet. The place I scrounged was the left side of yesterday's "Phantasm" image. Buried deep in one of the lateral filaments, today's curious little midget was an easy find. Actually, the filaments in this area are more like chains of sickle-shaped basins, such as those that surround the midget. As I said yesterday, there are also midgets far to the right of the "Phantasm" image. These midgets are of a totally different character, and I will show one of them tomorrow -- unless all the machines once again get tied up. After a few minute's thought, I named today's picture "Nest of Crescents". The parameter file runs moderately fast, though still slow enough so that it would be best to pick up the JPEG file of the image from: or from Paul Lee's web site at: I'm sorry to have once again disappointed the fans of the phantastic philosophy, but I just didn't get the time to write any stuff today. I'll give it another try tomorrow. I've still not spoken the unspeakable. The weather today was partly cloudy and hazy with a temperature of 84F 29C and a moderate west wind to keep things bearable. The weather is great, but it's getting extremely dry around here. It hasn't rained in almost 2 weeks, and if the lawns dry out much more, we'll start having lawn fires. I see it's time to shut down the fractal shoppe. So until next time, take care, and when the going gets hot, keep your cool. There have been plenty of occasions when I've had to cause to doubt the veracity of my awareness - when I've remembered dreams so long after I remember having them that I doubt whether I did in fact have them at the time or whether instead the memory itself is fake. The false memory phenomenon is a well-documented one; I have several childhood memories I happen to _know_ are false that are just as realistic as ones that (I _think_) are genuine. Where I got them, I dunno. This may be regarded by some as evidence that I have been abducted by aliens :-) >Before humans had concepts of nerves and brains >they seemed to know a great deal (possibly more than they do now) about >the nature of their own being and its relationship to the whole. > Yes, the key word here as I see it is "seemed". I want independent corroboration. Documented, quantified, and related to other aspects of the universe. Maybe I'm asking for too much. Maybe I want to know what it's like to be a bat without having to be a bat. As the man said, "Unfortunately, no-one can be _told_ what the Matrix is." It seems so extraordinarly _difficult_ to explain. Maybe each consciousness is different in such a fundamental way that even comparing them to see what they have in common is impossible. There must still be (I am gut-certain of) some common ground between everyone, so that two people can still touch, but though the "communications protocol" is the same, the "platforms" may be wildly divergent. >>It's been suggested to me that any "suitably complex" system >>automatically gets a soul (of some sort) assigned to (somehow) it when >>it is generated, thus enabling it to possess things like sentience and >>so forth. (Okay, I know, but the theory of computation is a well-established and formalised field, unlike a "theory of consciousness") It's been a passion of mine for many years - the conscious universe. Starting as small and simple as possible (it got me a reputation as someone who collects toilet rolls) and work it works its way up the ladder. The Internet is a faint hint of an early forerunner of an conscious biosphere. (Not just a biosphere with intelligence components, a _conscious biosphere_). Then work downwards and bring the bulk of the Earth into play. After that, the other smaller bodies of the solar system. (By this time there would already be far- flung components throughout this part of space). Then the Sun, with thoughts, ideas, memories plans and dreams woven out of currents of plasma. Eventually, the galaxy will know itself. Then the Local Group. Then the entire Virgo Supercluster... The vacuum in between... And I plan on living long enough to be part of it. > >You know, to hypothesise the continued existance of a being such as >yourself after the temporal destruction of your physical form does not >automatically lead to the symplistic modern western idea of a 'soul'. > Well, I know "soul" as I was using was biased in this way; I just couldn't think of a better word at the time. This is one of the problems I face with trying to understand many of the philosophies of consciousness - what do all those terms mean? Without the poetry, that is? Poetry is good at conveying meaning, but it does expect things of the audience that may not necessarily be the case. >This idea seems heavily Christian influenced, and basically to be some >sort of equivalent to the 'body' we experience in dreams, and is usually >called by ocultists the 'astral form'. Having done this, you can then comfortably discard them and proceed further. Some people never leave, or at least, haven't yet - there's no rush. Apparently, the Spiritualist picture gets fuzzier beyond this point, because people who proceed beyond the Summerland are not likely to return to participate in seances. >Certainly the cultural personality, sexual conditioning, >habits, basically the whole of what we call the mind, is usually >understood to dissolve soon after the separation from the body. > Well, so much of it seems kind of pointless once you don't _have_ a body any more, doesn't it? (Is a "residual self-image" enough?) Terry Pratchett often observes this in his Discworld novels (Death is the only character to appear in all of them, but then, Death is everywhere). In _Diaspora_, one of Greg Egan's characters, after being scanned and uploaded into the supercomputer network, chooses to retain his ability to urinate. For the sheer aesthetic pleasure that comes of having a really good widdle. I kid you not. >>It's probably beyond mental comprehension, because you have nothing >>left with which to comprehend it. The >observer of the mind does not seem to me to be a part of the mind, (this >is a crucial point), and though the mind cannot understand this, I can, >in some indescribable nonmental way. > This does seem to be the crux. I'm not convinced that there needs to be such an "observer". I can only appeal to Occam's Razor (since I don't know how to even UUEncode a gut feeling) and suggest that the "mind's observer" is in fact the mind itself. This may be a semantic quibble between us, though: your conception of "mind" may be narrower than mine; but on the other hand, my conception is thoroughly materialistic. >>Low Nag Sermon >>"I seem to be thinking that I think that I think I seem to be thinking. Somehow, the old name was substituted for thr correct name. But that kind of thing happens now and then. When I saw the spider-web midget of today's FOTD, I named the picture "The World-wide Web". The name is especially appropri- ate because both the WWW and fractals are semi-abstractions. The WWW is hard to pin down. Like a fractal, it is at the same time everywhere and nowhere. It is tera-bytes of data encoded onto millions of disks. It is where one goes when they open their browser. It exists as a single entity only because we have declared it so. Today's fractal is what happens when 20 parts of Z^20 is subtrac- ted from 0.1 part of Z^2. The spider-web effect is unlike anything I have seen -- certainly unique enough to be declared FOTD for June 05. And yes, I did soup up the image a bit in a graphics program. I could have done the same using Fractint alone, but I needed the other program to convert the image to JPEG format, which has become pretty much the Usenet standard. Speaking of Use(less)net, that's where the JPEG image has been posted to the newsgroup: And speaking of the WWW, the image has also been posted there, on Paul's web site at the URL: Today was busy again, so I had no time to compose my philosophy, (sorry guys and gals), but tomorrow (June 5) is Saturday, and unless the unexpected happens, I'll have a lot more time to think those profound thoughts. The weather today was continued dry. We're probably officially in a condition of extreme drought. The temperature of 78F 25.5C and crystal blue sky was perfect for everything except farmers. And this is the perfect time for me to pack away the fractals, shut down the fractal shoppe, turn on the TV and see if I can find anything worth the effort of watching. Until tomorrow, take care, and may your dreams be of fractals. It is a truly colorful midget. and I named it accordingly. But it brings out one of the few flaws in fractint -- the 256-color limitation. (Soon to be remedied I assume.) The bands, which I normally enjoy, are hugely in the way of the smooth gradient this image cries out for. But even with the visible breaks, the idea shows through. What we have here is a midget with a smooth, rolling plain surrounding it, and smooth, gently curved filaments strung with beads shooting out from the it, giving an overall effect (IMO) of spiritual tranquility. The parameter file runs in the moderately fast time of a few minutes, a time still not fast enough to avoid my having posted the image file in JPEG format to: and to: It was a perfect day for anything but farming here at Fractal Central today. The temperature topped at 79F 26C, the sky was blue, the humidity low, and the wind light. The normal rainfall for the month of June in these parts is about 10cm. So far we have had 0.0cm. The TV weather-casters are becoming real politicians, trying to appear happy when they forecast unending dry weather for vacationers, while not angering farmers, who desperately need rain. And what I need is something to inspire me to wax philosophical. But it's not going to happen today, so until next time, take care, and the if the floating-point M-set is as big as the solar system, how large would the M-set be at the limit of arbitrary precision? I >suspect that eventually things would grow boring and repetitive, just as >they do with extreme powers of Z. I suspect differently... from my meager explorations of the near-depths of the M-set, I notice two things. First, the patterns of filaments that surround a babyBrot (the sort that progress from four to eight to sixteen...) can become more and more intricate. This is partly because the boundaries between bands can "capture" a pattern (such as a seahorse or elephant) after a close encounter with a babyBrot in the valley where those patterns are found. Second, I notice something like ontology going on in the depths of the Mset! What I'm doing is using DEEPER II (URL below) to zoom somewhat randomly into the depths of the Mset, and then zooming manually to locate a babyBrot. DEEPER usually leaves me in a tangle of filaments that look much like the filaments seen at shallower depths, except they're "fuzzier". As we know, babyBrots are typically surrounded by repeating patterns positioned radially around the baby. Well, the same goes for never-ending spirals... and when we've zoomed in to 130 decimal places without a recent close encounter with a babyBrot, the "nearest" (depth-wise) babyBrot on the screen might easily require another 1,000,000-factor zoom to resolve. The first trick is figuring out how to tell the never-ending spirals from the babyBrot nests (this is not an easy task... perhaps I'll work up a little hide-and-seek example for my web page...). Once we've centered on a nest, it's a simple matter of zooming until the babyBrot appears. It's during this zoom into the nest that I see something that reminds me of ontology, but it's more of a _reverse_ ontology: The nest we're zooming into does not at first exhibit the radially-positioned patterns we expect - instead, we see the nest pattern repeated at intervals of zooming, and the standard filament mess in-between. At some point, the nest pattern gives way to the radially-positioned pattern we're familiar with... if my memory serves, it's not a sudden transition, but rather smooth and somewhat sneaky. If we start at the target babyBrot, and zoom out, the transition resembles something like ontology. I'll see what I can do towards working up an example, or even a movie, though each frame might take 20+ hours to complete on my P266! At any rate, I think there are novel organizations to the patterns of filaments in the Mset that have not yet been discovered because of limitations in resolution - and the only way to get around the resolution problem is to make an animation, which would take almost, but not quite, forever. The temperature of 86F (30C) is great, though not quite perfect, for outdoor activity. The only exceptions are with the neighborhood swimming pools, for which the weather is absolutely perfect, and with the farmers, for whom substantial rain has not fallen in three months. I rarely mention my two fractal cats, Thomas and Tippy, who prefer the weather dry. They are usually within sight as I compose my FOTD, sometimes offering an idea or two when my mind goes blank. Thomas is a lazy overweight 17lb (7.5kg) yellow- orange fellow, who likes nothing better than eating and watching the world from his platform by the window. (A window is a cat's television.) Tippy is a lean, wiry tabby of 10lbs (4.5kg), with a too-long tail and an attitude problem. His problem is that he hates other cats, and will attack any cat that dares to approach his territory. When Tippy fights, Thomas usually watches from the safety of the porch, but he will run to help if he sees Tippy getting into trouble. Sometimes, when studying my cats as they study me, I feel that they already know the answers to what man considers life's greatest mysteries. This may be so, but if it is, they have yet to share their knowledge. And this leads me to admit that I have not yet mustered the inspiration to put my cosmically important thoughts to paper, (or disk in this case). My cosmic thoughts may not be apparent in today's FOTD, but my cosmic fractal is. I have named the picture "The Softest Midget". This is because of the unusually soft coloring effect I have achieved serendipitously. The midget itself lies on the southeast filament of a midget on the negative tail of the M-set, at a longitude of -1.832 ... With all the goodies in the M-Mix4 formula, I rarely turn to the Mandelbrot set these days, but the Z^2+C formula is still the richest source of fractals I know of. Today's parameter file runs slowly, since it is somewhat into the arbitrary precision range. Therefore, a download is recommended from Usenet at: or from the WWW at: Since we're going into one of this area's patented heat waves, I'll probably fail once again tomorrow to find the energy to philosophize. But miracles are not impossible, (except for clear-thinking skeptics), so check in then to see what comes of things. Until that time, take care, and be at one with yourself. And there's a whole gallon where that came from. But why am I drinking so much iced tea?. . . Because I'm hot. It was hot today at Fractal Central, with a temperature of 98F (37C) and little in the way of a breeze. In the middle of the hottest part of the afternoon, the fractal air-conditioner stopped air-conditioning. This always happens at least once a year it seems, but why it's always on the hottest day remains a mystery. With the temperature in the southwest-facing fractal room hovering in the mid 90's (mid 30's C), I couldn't run the fractal computer for a new fractal, so I substituted a deep minibrot I found a few days ago. Even now as I write, this machine is doing strange things, so I'll have to keep it short. I named today's picture "Way-Down-East Brot" because it's just about the farthest east midget in the entire M-set. It's located way out on one of the filaments of the period-5 bud on the northeast coast of the main bay. Of course, it's not the absolute farthest-east midget, (there's no such midget), but it *is* the farthest east midget I've yet found. It's really not that great of an image, but with nothing better available, it will have to do. The JPEG file has been heatedly posted to: and to Paul Lee's web site at: Being as hot under the collar as I am, there's no earth shaking philosophy in today's FOTD to change the world-view of the world. I'll try again tomorrow, but the A/C man is very busy, so we'll have to see what happens. Until then, take care, and if you're in the northern hemisphere, keep your cool; if you're in the southern hemisphere, throw another log on the fire; if you're in the middle, do as your conscience dictates. The formula mixes portions of Z^150 and Z^1.5. The picture does feature a midget, though in this case the pattern around the midget is more interesting than the midget itself, which is lost at the center. The parameter file runs in under an hour. The JPEG image file has been posted to: and to Paul Lee's site at: The weather today here at Fractal Central was hot. The temperature topped at 97F (36C), about the same as yesterday. But a good breeze and slightly lower humidity made it a little more bearable. (Everywhere but in Fractal Central.) Due to the oppressive heat, the philosophy was stifled before it even got started, but I'll try again tomorrow, when the A/C man has promised to be here. You demand freedom! You are an intrepid explorer, one of those chosen few who smile at danger, chuckle at doom, laugh out loud at the thought of death. In other words, you are fearless! As a fearless and intrepid explorer, you venture to places where no man or woman has gone. And today you have gone on safari to the Mandelbrot jungle in quest of the lost Mandelbrot midget, the mystic midget which endows its owner with inestimable wealth, perfect health, eternal youth, immortality, union with God, and even better things. As you advance through the impenetrable undergrowth, near exhaustion and ready to drop, you wonder how much longer you can go on. Then you push aside one final tangle of vines and palm fronds, and you see it before you, shining and magic -- the Mystic Mandelbrot Midget! You are at the end of your quest. You sink to the earth, exhausted but happy in the knowledge that salvation is yours. Today's midget is the scene that greets your eyes. And I'm glad that you are an intrepid fractal explorer, because I'm not. I do my exploring at a computer keyboard, and my salvation is the cool air that filled Fractal Central about two hours ago and allowed me to explore for today's fractal. I named today's picture "Mandelbrot Jungle" when I saw the jungle-like effect produced by the tangle of green and dark red features surrounding the central midget. To create today's picture, I took the M-Mix4 formula, mixed a tiny part of Z^800 with twice as much of Z^400, and let it iterate along a critical plane. Searching tirelessly for at least 15 minutes, I found today's scene where the two parts of the formula come together and overlap. There are midgets all through this fractal, but the one in today's image is one of the more interesting. If you are interested, the JPEG file can be viewed by downloading it from: or from Paul Lee's great web site at: For the more patient, the attached parameter file runs in only a few minutes. The air-conditioning is back in operation here at Fractal Central, which is a good thing because it is still hot. The day was one with very blue sky, very hot sun, and a very dry atmosphere. It reminded me of an afternoon I spent in Fargo, ND one August about 15 years ago. The temperature of 94F (34.5C) was perfect for a fractal hunt, especially with the A/C fixed. Of course, all this blue sky means that the drought is worsening. The Palmer Drought Index shows severe drought in this area, and if no rain falls within a week, it will go to extreme drought, which is probably as bad as it can get. I have not yet heard of any lawn fires, but with all the dried out straw on the ground, it won't be long. I guess that's it for now. I didn't have the time for a lot of philosophy because of the backed up work. But hope springs eternal, and tomorrow might be the big day. So check then, and if the philosophy isn't in sight, a new fractal most certainly will be. Until then, take care, and if anyone discovers the way to make rain, would they please explain it to our farmers. I'm going to post them to the Fractal-Art list tomorrow evening, but I wanted to give everyone a sort of "heads-up" for a couple of reasons: 1. I'd like the discussion to stay pretty much in one place, and since the contest is for all fractal software (not just FractInt or Ultra Fractal) it seems the best place for that is the F-A list; and, 2. Many people might not be subscribed to the F-A list (several unsubbed some time ago) and I didn't want to force them to go to the list archives and catch up on the discussion once we've started. If you're not currently subscribed to the F-A list, you can subscribe by sending a message with nothing but the word "subscribe" in the body of the message to fractal-art-request@icd.com and that will do the trick. I've started to build a rough contest web site for this year. You can sneak a peek here: http://www.fractalus.com/contest99/ It's not linked from the main entrance page on my site because it's not "ready" yet. Damien M. Jones \\ dmj@fractalus.com \\ Fractalus Galleries & Info: \\ http://www.fractalus.com/ Please do not post my e-mail address on a web site or in a newsgroup. In fact, it looks even more like a jungle than the "M-Jungle" image that appeared yesterday. The resemblance is not coincidental, since today's image was created with the same type of formula. To create today's image, I took a tiny part of Z^800, added twice as much Z^400, and multiplied the sum by 197520000. The result, when the critical plane was displayed, was a fractal, in which today's image lay deeply buried. I have named the picture "Midget With Sawblade", because that's the phrase that came to mind when I observed the jagged pattern surrounding the midget. Although the parameter file is fast, the JPEG file is even faster. That JPEG file has been posted to Usenet at: and to Paul Lee's world famous FOTD web site, which can be reached at the URL: Today came in with a big weather change. Instead of hot sun and a temperature in the 90'sF (mid 30'sC) we had low clouds and a temperature of 66F (19C). The 0.04 inches (0.1 cm) of rain that fell in a sudden shower late this afternoon came as a complete surprise. And although it was not enough to help the drought, it did keep things from getting worse. Well, the "war" has ended, and I'm relieved that it's finished. The mighty USA, protector of the worlds oppressed, has won a great victory over the forces of evil. We have defeated a country that could not fight back. The great victory is the view they're trying to convince us of here in the land of the free and home of the brave. But much of the stuff I see on the internet tells a different story, and it can't all be wrong. (You must excuse my brief diversion into politics and my blatantly cynical tone, but I have learned over the years that the more cynical the view, the more likely it is to be right.) Unfortunately, my sincere intentions to philosophize today were once again set back, this time by the cynical and somewhat angry mood that came over me when I heard our president address the nation this morning. But don't forget why the world hates cynics -- cynics are usually right. So, right or not, I'll pack it up here at Fractal Central, where the neighborhood dogs are barking in unison. I'll return tomorrow with another fractal and some long overdue philosophy, (I hope). Until then, take care, and I've got nothing more to say until next time. The cloudless sky of sapphire, temperature of 77F (25C), light wind and low humidity were perfect for anything outdoors or indoors. But the drought is growing ever worse. The rain of yesterday, which wasn't even enough to drip through the trees, has gone, leaving the parched soil as dry and dusty as ever. And yes, we are now getting reports of lawn fires and also being advised to be careful with matches. Today's fractal was created with the M-Mix4 formula -- that formula with no end of surprises. It's one of those images that shows what can be done with good old-fashioned equal-iteration bands. I named the picture "Old Smoky Minibrot" when I noticed the subdued and rather muddy effect the excess detail gives to the scene. To achieve the effect, I added 100 parts of Z^(-100) to Z and searched out the midgets that almost always lurk in the critical planes of such formulas. (Sorry, I meant formulae!) The parameter file is a slow one, so I advise picking up the image file from the Usenet group: or from the WWW at: While skimming through our local newspaper this afternoon, I came upon Cecil Adams' column "The Straight Dope". The question he attempted to answer was "what is the mind?", which can be better stated, "what is consciousness?" In his reply, Cecil discussed artificial intelligence, the Turing test, etc., but never answered the question. This is probably the most basic question of philosophy. It is not a question of science. It has been argued for thousands of years, and after all that discussion we are no closer to an answer than we were when we first recognized the problem. There are two ways of looking at this problem, both of which can be supported by science, (organized common-sense). The materi- alist position states that the mind is an epiphenomenon of the central nervous system, therefore matter is real and the mind is a by-product of matter. This viewpoint can be supported by demonstrating the effect that various chemicals have on the mind when they are introduced into the physical brain. The material- ist viewpoint is also supported by the fact that when the brain is injured, the mind suffers corresponding dysfunction. This makes idealists uneasy. The idealists take the opposite stand, and claim that the mind is real and matter is an image in the mind. They point out that we can know nothing of matter or an outer world other than images in our mind that are produced by impacts upon our sensory receptors. Idealisis remind us that the sensory receptors, and even the central nervous system itself, which is the supposed source of the mind, are in fact no more than images in the mind. This viewpoint cannot so easily be discarded, since the discov- eries of quantum mechanics have shown that, at least with sub- atomic 'particles', the observation is in some strange way a part of the object. This makes materialists uneasy. Don't expect an answer from me. It's the old chicken-or-egg problem, and it might be that the question is meaningless and there is no answer. I suspect that mind and matter are two different ways of observing the same thing. And what would that thing be that can be viewed from below and appear as mind, or viewed from above and appear as matter? Perhaps for the answer we should turn to the wisdom found in certain eastern religions. At this point in time, I realize that without intending to I have actually done a bit of philosophizing. Of course, my meager thoughts will add nothing to the world's knowledge, but it's still fun to pontificate now and then. With that admission I'll shut down the fractal shoppe for another night and retire to my TV chair to see what trouble I can get into. Until tomorrow, when even more philosophy might appear, take care, and it doesn't matter if you don't mind. What else could I name it but "Shishkebab". The formula responsible for the feast is the M-Mix4, with parameters set to calculate 1/Z-Z+C. Yes even that unlikely formula generates a fractal with unlimited places of interest hidden within it. Actually, today's image is the latest in a seemingly unending series of Minibrot midgets. Midgets are great, but I think I might be growing bored with them. Maybe it's time to get back to the four-dimensional Julibrot and the incredible scenes therein. We'll see how it goes. Tomorrow's FOTD, however, will feature another midget, since I've already got the fractal finished. But when the day after arrives, who knows where I'll go. I'm rather in the mood for some new aspects of the familiar scenes of the Mandelbrot set. Today's parameter file calculates in a reasonably few minutes, but if that time is still unreasonable, the JPEG image file is available on Usenet at: and on the WWW at: The weather today was variably cloudy with occasional very light showers, which did nothing to ease the drought. The temperature of 74F (23C) felt warmer than it actually was, due to the high humidity. It was a perfect day for the fractals and a near perfect day for the philosophy. When I left off in yesterday's FOTD, we were pondering the mind, which is generated by the central nervous system, which is an image in the mind, which is generated by . . . It's a hopeless task, an endless circular argument with no way out. One can build as convincing an argument for Materialism as for Idealism, and both arguments have equal validity, since the discussion lies beyond the realm of scientific investigation. Well, I see we've come to the end of another FOTD. But I'll return with another fractal tomorrow around this same time. For now I'm going to settle into my overstuffed chair and see what kind of junk I can find on the TV. If I find nothing, I can always fall asleep. Until next time, take care, and I wonder what the chances are that I'll enter this year's fractal-art contest. The only difference is that instead of adding C, I added 1/C. Since yesterday's picture was named "Shishkebab", I named today's picture "Lacy Shishkebab". Here we have the same tasty morsels skewered to the fractal skewer, and the same shy midget lurking at the center. Today's picture is far slower than yesterday's however, since it shows a much deeper part of the fractal. The value of 0.03 assigned real(p3) is not whimsical. It is necessary to produce the fractal when 1/C is calculated. The 10000 assigned imag(p3) extends the escape radius far enough that the fractal is not cut off. As I said, this is a slow parameter file. It takes 6 hours on a 486 and over 1/2 hour on a p233. As a cure for the resulting impatience, I recommend picking up the JPEG file of the image from Usenet at: or from the WWW at: I seem to be getting into a fractal rut lately, concentrating on one Minibrot after another. So I'll take a brief break from midgets the next week or two, and concentrate instead on new views of old objects. Yes, I mean that other obsession of mine, the odd slices of the four-dimensional Z^2+C Julibrot. The weather was interesting today here at Fractal Central, as a steady procession of showers passed over, interspersed with brilliant sunshine. Some of the showers were heavy enough to drop 1/2cm of rain, which helps the drought but comes nowhere near ending it. The temperature of 81F (27C) was perfect for the fractal I found. Having found today's fractal yesterday, I had much time to ponder the mind-body problem, which is the main problem of philosophy. I suspect that if we ever solve this problem, most of the other philosophical puzzles will quickly fall into place. Looked at from one direction, the mind is a product of the body. >From the other direction, it is seen that we can know nothing more of the body than its image in the mind. This logical circle has been spinning since man began thinking, and it is not about ready to stop. I see it as a choice between Materialism and Idealism. Matter might or might not be real -- there is no way to determine its ultimate reality. On the other hand, we are absolutely certain that mind exists. A mind might or might not fit the precise definition of reality, but at least one mind does exist, and unless Solipsism is true, many minds exist. When forced to choose between matter, which we know only through an image in the mind, and mind, which I am absolutely certain does exist, I choose mind as the more real aspect of existence. This is why I tend to Idealism in my world-view. And now, I'd best tend to wrapping things up for the day and closing down the fractal shoppe until tomorrow. Tomorrow's fractal will not have a midget in it, but it will still be great. Until then, take care, and where have all the midgets gone?
